Can someone tell me if this is still true?, from an earlier post.

Hi,

As far as I know foreigners can apply for the state-run healthcare coverage of Hungary ("Tarsadalombiztositas", or TB, approximately social insurance or social security) for 4-5000 HUF/Month (10-15 EUR) just like otherwise uninsured locals (e.g. unemployed, housewives, etc.)

If you have a (legal) job, your employer pays a percentage of your wage for the same coverage with some extra paperwork compared to local employees.

Really the only difference from locals is you carry around some little gray booklet ("Igazol谩s az eg茅szs茅g眉gyi szolg谩ltat谩sra val贸 jogosults谩gr贸l") instead of the laminated "TB" card we have.

We are moving to Budapest and need proof of coverage for a Residents Permit.

Generally, speaking yes it works, but the amount is HUF 5100 per month (for 2011). N.B. They are going to raise it with a few hundred HUF for sure given the state of the National Budget. However, I would ask the provider helping you with the arrangements for visa and legal / immigration on your case as it is a bit more complicated. Other points where it might go wrong is proof of residence.

Where did you find this info concerning 5100Ft? On the site of the OEP I only found the following information [1] (in Hungarian):

"Nagykor煤 k眉lf枚ldi 谩llampolg谩r 聳 2009. j煤lius 1-j茅től 聳 a minim谩lb茅r 50 %-a (a 2012. janu谩r 1-j茅től 茅rv茅nyes 93.000 Ft-os minim谩lb茅r alapulv茅tel茅vel 46.500 Ft) ... megfizet茅s茅vel szerezhet eg茅szs茅g眉gyi ell谩t谩sra jogosults谩got."

("A grown up stranger citizen -- starting from 1st July 2009 -- can gain the right to medical treatment by paying the equivalent of 50% of the minimal wages (which is 93.000 Ft starting from 1st January 2012), thus the amount to pay is 46.500 Ft.")

Or am I missing something? According to the referred source this rule was valid since 2009, but you mentioned that in 2011 the price was 5100 Ft, so maybe I misunderstood something, or there is an option I am not aware of.

The 50% rate is for non-residents (k眉lf枚ldi). Residents in Hungary (citizens and foreigners that that have a national ID card and call Hungary their home) pay different rates. The current resident rate for those that work in Hungary is about 30,000 HUF a month, and for those that do not work in Hungary (such as students) is 6390 HUF.

Hi klsallee, thanks for pointing me to this document. Indeed I did not notice it. I'm not sure it applies for our case (third country citizen staying one year with invitation), but I will try to find out.

If you're a foreigner with Hungarian address card (pink coloured) then its 6660 forint/month. But the condition is that the address card must be 1 year old atleast.

If the address card is not 1 year old then first you have to pay about 200,000 forints for a new contract plus 29000 forints/month until your address card is聽 an year old. After one year monthly cost is 6660/month.
