As long as you are in possession of the entitlement certificate your hospital treatment is free of charge. If you have a European Health insurance card from your home country the treatment is free too. In case you have none of these certificates you better contact the entitlement unit at St.Luke's Hospital. Good luck.

As far as I am aware the EHIC card is for tourists not residents.

@GozoMo I don’t know from where you took this but is not right at all  First of all Maltese EHIC card is valid only for abroad. I am living in Malta and i have settled my life here with my own fully paid farmhouse. I live in malta so i don’t have any other insurance and for sure i will not visit ST James Hospital. So your reply was for nothing but anyway thanks your try to help.

I tell you where I got this from, the person who answered your question advised you to use your EHIC card, thats why I said you can use it here if you are a tourist not if you live here.   By the way I have lived in Gozo for nearly twelve years.

I advised you to contact the Entitlement Unit of the Maltese health authorities at St. Luke's Hospital. Let us know what information you got from them.

    -@Itaspa TransportQuite Simple, if your EHIC is issued by Malta it is not valid here so what GozoMo said is correct as you are not a tourist.

All the time you were employed, assuming you paid social security and tax, you had health cover through the Maltese government and as far as I am aware, as you are not a Maltese citizen, that would cease when you lose your job although if you have worked here long enough to have the right to unemployment benefit you health cover may continue. Otherwise this in turn means, as you would no longer have health cover you would need to arrange some to avoid invalidating your residency, permanent or otherwise!
