Hello, Sarah.  My husband actually changed his last name to his stepfather's last name as an adult, right before his daughter was born.  His birth father was only that and never a part of his life, so they (he and his mother) did not want his birth father's last name to continue into another generation.

We went to the courthouse in that town/county to get a registered court document of the name change (maybe there is something similar for adoptions?).  Then we took that document to the Secretary of State office to get it apostilled.  We submitted that with our entire application in order to prove his name on birth certificate was the same person/name on our Maltese application.  Since it was such a long time ago and his name was the same all his adult life, it was not a problem.  I think if you make this effort in explaining these less common documents and attaching apostilled records in support of your explanation, it shouldn't be a problem for you either.  After all, it cannot be the first time they have had adoption paperwork, which is an understandable situation.

If you search this forum, there was a member, Eddie B-A   /en/profile/2888384-eddie-b-a.html   who sucessfully changed his name and was recommending the lawyer he used to several other forum members.

Perhaps you could contact him and he could guide you on the costs involved.

I will send you a private message with the name of a firm that is led by a UK barrister registered in Malta. I have not used them myself, so I cannot give you an indication of their fees, but you could contact for a quote for comparison purposes.
