Managing mailboxes or PO boxes in Spain

Cheryl

Hello everyone,

Something as simple as receiving mail can become a whole new experience when you settle in Spain as an expat. Mailing management can indeed be different from what you are used to. In order to help other expats and soon-to-be expats, we invite you to share your insights.

How do you receive mail in Spain? Do you have a traditional mailbox, a PO Box, or another system?

How was it to set it up and what are the formalities?

Is the postal service reliable and secure?

How do you handle missed deliveries or forwarding your mail?

Do you have any tips you would like to share to newcomers and fellow expats?

Share your insights and experience.

Thank you for your contribution.

We live in the campo and there is no mail delivery to our house.

We have a PO Box at the post office in town. We pay about €90 a year for this - it usually increases every year.

Depending on where you live you may find that there is a waiting list for one of these boxes.

It really annoys me that Correos charge us €90 for something that we have to have because they don't want to deliver post to our house. We would be happy with a delivery once or twice a week.

The problem with collecting our post is that the post office is only open Monday to Friday until 2:30pm. It is almost impossible to park anywhere nearby (I have mobility problems so can't walk far).

Another problem is when ordering something online (eg Amazon) we don't know whether to give them our house address for a courier delivery or our PO Box address for post. If it is a courier and we give our PO Box address they usually seem to deliver in the afternoon when the post office is closed. Also, the post office will not accept deliveries from courier companies unless it is a very small package.

Out of interest why won't they deleiver your post? Is that the same with your neighbours?
