Thinking to move to Spain

Hi!

My name is Jessica, you can call me Jess

........I was born in Lima, Peru and moved to Texas in 1986, married with 3 grown sons. With the none sense going on in the USA, (no my president) my husband and I are thinking to move to Europe since we do have the Italian Citizenship as well. I love the sea and don't like winter so a place in the south of Spain should be good. I will be going to Spain with my sister in September to check properties since she wants to move regardless.聽
I am a Outreach Counselor for the Medicaid program and my husband is an independent adjuster. I am not sure about jobs since we are already 50 years old. Maybe some type of business or services that we can offer to get some $$$ for our expenses. Any advice is appreciated.

Hi Jessica,
I am wondering why do you want to the US for Spain. Spain is a beautiful country, it's in the EU, and so. But it's not the US (not even close to it. Unemployment is quite important, jobs are scarce for citizens as well as for immigrants). And Trump won't聽 stay in power for long if he keeps underperforming as he is doing since day 1.
In other words, I would stay in America. The EU (but Germany and perhaps France) is not doing well, and there is no light at the end of their tunnel yet (if you understand what I mean)聽

Hi SerAle,

Thank you for the advice. I will be in Spain and other cities in EU by the end of August for vacations until the end of September. My sister is planning to buy a real estate in the South maybe Murcia, she has friends there and have some time of business.
About what's going on right now is complicated, I think is going to take a lot of time to be able to removes the people in government that don't care about the American people. They will kill the economy and we need universal Healthcare asap....

Hi,
If you are going to Spain to find work or for their universal health system , I think is a gross mistake. Unless you settle there with a job and a paid HC you will have troubles until you get your permanent residencent condition. Spaniards are not looking for more immigrants unless they are visitors who can pay for lodge and health if needed.

I have a EU passport. I have the Italian citizenship so shouldn't be a problem.

Good decision.Its a beautiful country, friendly people & along the coast, a small business is not a problem. I visit every year & will keep it that way. Kool Canadian

Sergi, I am in a very similar situation to Jessica, and I can tell you that in many many ways, Spain is better than the US is right now.

If the quality of Trump's work mattered, he wouldn't have been elected in the first place.聽 He was a crappy businessman whose only real demonstrated skill was in self-promotion; when it came to running his real estate or casino businesses, he was terrible.

In other words, the problems and reasons someone might want to move are bigger than Trump, but he is a big symptom of them.

You are right about jobs.聽 Unemployment is still quite high in Spain and finding a good job that pays even a decent living wages is difficult, but please do not think that the US is a paradise in comparison.聽 Many regions in the US suffer high unemployment and lots of social problems.聽 Many of those social problems are handled better (in my opinion, anyway) in the EU than they are in the US.

Hi Jess!聽 My wife and I are in a similar situation- she moved from Lima to the States in the 80s as a teenager and then we moved to Valencia last year.

You have it a lot easier with the Italian/EU citizenship, because with that you can move anywhere in the EU (including Spain, of course) without much trouble.聽 There is tons of info online that is aimed at British people, and that will almost all apply to you since you are essentially the same situation as them- citizens of an EU nation moving to another EU nation.聽 (Of course, your advantage is that Italy doesn't appear to be planning an exit from the EU, unlike the UK right now!)

As Sergi pointed out, jobs here in Spain can be tough to come by.聽 I assume you're native in Spanish?聽 That's obviously the single biggest factor in getting a job.聽 But in addition, the reality is that your present job experience doesn't really apply directly to anyone here since they don't have Medicaid.聽 They do have private insurance, of course, so maybe experience as an adjuster can work into a job, but it's hard to say.

Can you do your job remotely?聽 If you can, moving to a place with solid fiber optic internet and a willingness to stay up late might work out well for you.聽 Bear in mind that with Spanish costs of living, you don't have to make nearly as much money to live decently here as you do in the US.
