Elder Care -- 2023-24

When my late father required nursing-home care

in his final year, the California facility was

charging him 10,000 USD per month.

This bankrupted him .. and left his second wife

and other family members paying the hefty bills.

An Ecuador-based couple who recently visited

Mexico has posted the information that an

Ajijic, Mexico, nursing home is charging about

2,000 USD per month for such care.

In Ecuador, they reported, an in-home care person

can be hired for about 500 USD per month, for a

schedule of six days a week, eight hours a day.

So several such staff could be hired, if needed,

for under 2,000 per month.

@cccmedia thank you for this information.聽 聽 I am 69 and a Permanent resident of Mexico, although I still spend five months each year in the States.聽 聽 Yes, long term care is miserably expensive.聽 聽So, if and when necessary, I will most likely turn to a place in Mexico, as so many countries outside of USA will care for the elderly within their financial means.馃檪

According to an article at the Yapatree website,

assisted care living is available in Ecuador

for even less than facilities in Ajijic and

Guadalajara, Mexico, now charge.

The details are available at the Googleable

web page posted below.

The faciliities listed are in Cuenca, Ecuador.

The information was posted in 2022 so will

have to be confirmed by our members.

Ecuador is easy to move to as far as the needed steps with their immigration. Mexico is much more complex and the income or savings required will likely be well above $3K per month or $60K in savings for 2023. You can visit Numbeo.com for a comparison of costs to live in Cuenca vs Guadalajara vs where you live.. There are several assisted living facilities in the Ajijic area. You could contact the Lake Chapala Society as they may be able to help with a list of them. Good luck.
