Expired RNE

robalbanyg

Hello,  I have an expired RNE.  Is it possible renew it?  I was last in Brazil in 2017 and my RNE expired in 2018.  I have read about a fine of R$10000 to renew.  But want to know if anyone knows about this process.  Thanks!

It truly saddens me to say this, but to the best of my knowledge, If you've been out of Brazil for 24 continuous months, or longer, without notifying and clearing your absence in advance with the Federal Police, you are not going to get a renewal, your card has lapsed. They won't just renew it, you'll need to start the whole process over again.

I have to agree with rraypo on the likelihood of renewing.   And unfortunately, your timing couldn't have been worse:  In November of 2017 the current Law of Migration went into effect, and the Cédula de Identidade de Estrangeiro (CIE, the identity card that represents your RNE) that you have was replaced with the Carteira de Registro Nacional Migratório, the CRNM, so the document you have no longer exists to be renewed.   CIEs that still had time on them were temporarily grandfathered, then replaced with CRNMs for resident foreigners in Brazil  as they expired.  You can check with the nearest Brazilian Consulate to confirm, but the window for you to make that switch almost certainly closed in 2019.
