NIF number

hello folks! quick question here. I am a U.S. citizen living in Brasil under permanent residency. I recently started the process to open a bank account with Banco do Brasil. They are requesting my NIF which in the States is a tax id # (TIN)

I would like to know if anyone has been through this process here in Brasil

thanks!

The term NIF is used in Portugal and Spain. In Brazil it is a CPF number.(Cadastro de Pessoas F铆sicas). Plenty of info on this site on how to obtain one. If you are a permanent resident you should already have a CPF number.

@bepmoht

thanks for your response! Unfortunately that is not what the bank is requesting. They already have my CPF but the Receita Federal wants my ITID which in my case is my ssn. I discovered this after doing some research

Intersting. I never recall anyone being required to give their social security number to a bank on brazilian soil to open an account. I鈥檓 wondering if this is a special account of some kind or if this a new Banco do Brasil policy?

This is quite common. Foreign banks are required to report holdings of US persons abroad. They typically ask you to fill out form W9 for this purpose.

I opened two accounts in Brazil, Nubank and Sicoob. Neither asked for my social security number.

When I opened my Bank of Brasil account about a year ago, they asked for my SS number.聽
