Looking for suggestions for Skype phone number

CariocaNY

Happy Holidays to all:

As most probably know, Skype phone #s are over. That is, the ability to have a U.S. phone number to receive calls and texts is no longer being renewed.

Does anyone know of a RELIABLE alternative.

I see alternatives on the web but have no idea which are for real and which are bogus.

My personal needs are for occasional calls or texts to a US phone number.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I have Mint mobile for $15 a month and it supports wireless calling.  So as long as I can connect to a wireless network I can call and text with my US number when I'm in Brazil.  I use a 2 sim phone so I can also have a local Brazil sim card too.  I think there have been a couple of other threads with a similar question.

If you are liable to receive calls/texts from the same numbers repeatedly, why not use Whatsapp - and it is secure and free? Everyone does here...

Thank Peter, but I need a US based phone number to receive calls and texts.

My WhatsApp is linked to my Brazil number.

It would be SO NICE if Whatsapp could be a solution for my needs for communication in the USA BUT nobody in my large family or circle of friends use Whatsapp. My banks don't use it. The IRS doesn't use it nor do my retirement funds sources use it. When I'm shopping by phone in the USA there are no stores that use it. When making reservations for cars/hotels in the USA, again, very difficult to find any users of Whatsapp.

I "get by" here in Brazil using Vonage residential (about U$23/mo) so that when I sit on hold for hours or have long conversations with family/firends, I have a POT (plain old telephone) service that functions without a problem EXCEPT that it is basically a plain old telephone line (never have been ablt to use Vonage on mobile gear except for when Vonage was new (about 2002) and I used it via a laptop connection (obsoleted for residentil customers).

Google Voice provided services for a while but it is limited by some factor that I do not comprehend (doesn't work for calls on my Brazilian cell phone or my laptop but does on my wi-fi-only tablet that I purchased in Portugal).

I too would like to have a Skype phone replacement that works on ANY device, any time, anywhere, inbound and outbound with a USA telephone number (preferably my old home state area code) AND that can serve in 2fa (two factor authentication) on USA gov't sites (note that many places identify VOIP calls and do not allow them as valid authentication numbers.

12/29/25 @CariocaNY.  Like @mberigan, I use Vonage Home.  Their Extensions app also works on my Brazilian cellphone, but it's not dependable, especially for incoming calls.  It doesn't support texting at all.  It also needs to be set up (I believe) in the US; once that's done, the box can be brought here and should work, but I don't think that it can be set up here.  So it's not the optimal solution for everything you want.

I have moved two-factor ID to an Authenticator app in every case where I possibly could, so that problem almost never comes up for me.  In the rare cases that it does, I'm able to opt for a voice call on my Vonage line.

I needed to urgently resolve a similar situation earlier this year, especially with US-based banks and brokerages still insisting on TFA (two-factor authentication) to a US cell phone via text or phone call.   After a great deal of research I decided on Tello, which has worked out well here, both via Wi-Fi Calling as well as, when necessary, International Roaming, given its access to T-Mobile's network.  My plan for unlimited text and minutes runs at $8 a month excluding  taxes ($11 a month all-inclusive).  On their site there is a tool to verify whether your (unlocked) device is Tello-compatible.  Another member here stated in a related thread that he was able to activate phone service while physically in Brazil with his e-SIM equipped device.

Yes, I indeed activated my phone with an esim while in Brazil with Tello. I’ve been using three phones down here since July of 2024 with zero issues to date. It’s definitely a viable option with capable hardware.
