New expats in Bras铆lia, quick question about marriage witnesses

inplainview

Hi everyone,

My partner and I are new in Bras铆lia and are starting the civil marriage process. Tiny logistical plot twist, we need two witnesses and we don鈥檛 really know anyone here yet.

The notary said the requirement is basically 鈥渁cquaintances鈥, so the bar is pleasantly low. The witnesses would need to show up twice, once for the marriage license application and again a few days later for the ceremony.

So, how do people usually handle this when they鈥檝e just arrived in town? Any friendly, normal ways to meet potential witnesses without it sounding like we鈥檙e recruiting for a heist? We have a toddler, so we don't go out much and our venues to meet people are limited to the playground, which is usually empty.

If you鈥檝e been through this in Bras铆lia, tips on where to meet people quickly, or even how you approached this awkward little step, would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi.. You probably try some church or law clinic of university of Brasilia for assistance.. They would be able to help or referring to someone suitable.

12/07/25 @inplainview.聽 You might ask the cart贸rio whether they know a couple of people who can stand in as witnesses for you.聽 They may have people unofficially associated with them who'll do it for a fee.

InterNations has a community in Bras铆lia.聽 You may meet some acquaintances there who'll do it.聽

I was hesitant to ask the cart贸rio, but if you think it might be acceptable, I will ask them.

Another idea I had overnight was to contact some interpreters to help with translation, since I do not speak Portuguese. They might also be able to act as witnesses if the cart贸rio allows it, or they might have friends who would be willing to do so.

02/08/25 @inplainview.聽 Great idea about the translator.聽 Since you'll need one anyway, maybe you can make it part of the package.
