Brian Ward, 36, got his first taste of living in a Spanish-speaking country after high school graduation. Since then, his life has consisted of traveling around the world, surviving on canned tuna at some points, pretending to be pro-surfer Kelly Slater鈥檚 second cousin and spying on his Russian Mafia neighbors. Ward decided to compile his journals of living in Mexico, Spain and other countries throughout Latin America and Europe, with travel tips on how to live rent-free for under $25 a day in his book titled 鈥淪ingle Abroad: Confessions of a Boyish Man.鈥� His book, referred to as 鈥渁 modern day version of 鈥楾he Motorcycle Diaries鈥� except with more whining鈥� by Lulu.com, a self-publishing company, follows Ward鈥檚 adventures, both good and painful, from sharing pants in Costa Rica, to traveling the European rail system on canned tuna, to surviving Mexico鈥檚 60-year-old buses. 鈥淚f you can鈥檛 already tell, I was a loser in high school,鈥� Ward wrote in his book鈥檚 introduction. 鈥淭he only reason I got through it was because most of my fellow students thought I was completely out of my mind. My senior quote for the high school yearbook was, 鈥業s the ringing in my head bothering you?鈥欌�� While traveling, nobody knew who Ward used to be, and he said he used this opportunity to constantly reinvent himself, sometimes attempting to impress women by telling them he was pro-surfer Kelly Slater鈥檚 second cousin. 鈥淭hey don鈥檛 know you don鈥檛 have a job, you did bad in high school and your car鈥檚 a piece of junk,鈥� Ward said. 鈥淵ou can just invent your own identity.鈥� Ward first experienced the art of identity crafting while living in Costa Rica. He jokingly asked his grandmother for a ticket to Colombia for graduation, and unexpectedly, she bought him a ticket to Costa Rica, where some of her friends lived. He learned Spanish by while shopping for cigarettes for his host brother and spending the majority of his time listening to and learning about his family鈥檚 obsession with Levi鈥檚 Jeans. 鈥淚 brought this pair of Levi鈥檚 Jeans to Costa Rica that didn鈥檛 fit me, and gave them to the my host family. The whole family took turns wearing them. They were in constant circulation 24-hours a day,鈥� Ward said. He explained that when one family member would take them off at bedtime, another person would put them on. 鈥淭hey鈥檙e probably still wearing those things,鈥� he said.
