Qs from a British pensioner (66) hoping to emigrate to Mauritius

mike102

Hi all. Thanks for your help so far, a few more questions:

  • What's the least expensive way to transfer money from the UK to Mauritius? My bank (Co-op) is demanding a ludicrous sum to do this, to the point I'm planning to close the account.
  • Do British expats with Mauritian residency permits have a choice in whether thay pay income taxes (and other taxes) in the UK or Mauritius?
  • I plan to spend up to Rs240,000 for a used car, of a modest size. Any advice? I'll be based in Floreal, so any reliable used-car merchants there / Curepipe?
  • I understand I'll need to trade in my UK driving licence for a Mauritian one within a month of buying a car. Will this entitle me to drive indefinitely without taking a further test?
  • annual tax for running a car?
  • recommendations on insurance companies and breakdown services?

Thanks!

Hi

First Direct, ie HSBC owned charges £5 flat rate to mru account . You can do it online to mru bank. Note that in mru, you need to get the IBAN account number instead of sort code and account number. Have used it several times so far  seamless transfers

Thanks. Would i need to have an HSBC account to do this, or can i just walk into a branch? And is it possible to specify the Rupee value, as I'll be paying in Sterling?

@mike102  if you are still in Mauritius, please go to the HSBC bank there and ask if it will be easier to transfer money from the UK if you have a HSBC account in the UK. If so, open an HSBC account in the UK and transfer money into it regularly. And please let me know via a message.

There was a Barclays bank in Mauritius but it has changed to ABSA now.

Here you go -- this is the basic information for taxation, but please make enquiries.

@Tookays Thanks. In the UK, used Xe.com in the end, very straightforward and easy, great exchange rate too.

XE.com flat rate fee of GBP1.99 (about MUR120)
