Dear All,

I want to apply for the nationality for my children born in Belgium. I received the nationality certificate for me but not for my children. I can not find any information on the procedure to apply for them.

Can someone guide me in the similar situation?

Hello!

I have L card, translated apostilled birth certificate, 5 years of uninterrupted residence and work.

Has anybody had a situation when to accept the nationality application at the commune they demand the Birth certificates of the parents or their marriage certificate (because in my Birth certificate the Place of birth for my parents is not specified, just their name/second names and my place of birth)? This is first time I hear about this 鈥 cannot find a legal written requirement for that.

One of my parents is deceased with no possibility to get his docs...

@gannam

And again stupid commune employees.

There is NO legal requirement that the place of birth of your parents must be written in YOUR birth certificate. In mine it is also not written - only my parents鈥 names and their dates of birth.

In many, if not almost all, countries in the world, parents鈥 places of birth are not included. This document is about YOU, not about them.

And asking for a parents鈥 marriage certificate is complete nonsense. They may never have been married. Or, as in your case, one of them may already be deceased.

I never stop being amazed at how stupid, arrogant, and tactless commune employees can be鈥

Anyway, your problem is solved very simply:

You submit the birth certificate that you do have. If they refuse to accept it, you ask them for an official written refusal to accept your documents.

Magically, after that, they usually accept everything.

If they refuse to give such a paper, or if they give one where they write this nonsense, you can file a formal written complaint and send it by registered mail to the commune and to the Ministry of Interior (Binnenlands Bestuur).

Good luck and please write back and tell us how it ended.

Congrats!!

if your kids are minors it should be automatic

They mentioned that the documents should not be older than six months. Does this mean we need to obtain a new birth certificate, or can we use the one we already have even though it鈥檚 older than six months?

1. Application Region:

Leuven

2. Application Date:

30/10/2025 very first online form request

15/12/2025, they provide a receipt and send it out for the decision

3. Requested Documents:

  1. Birth certificate (apostilled original duplicate from home and its official (Belgian) translation into Dutch)
  2. Economical participation: Individuele rekeningen and Loonfiches combined giving >= 468 working days
  3. Social integration: Attest van inburgering after the integration test
  4. Dutch language certificate (A2) from ILT

4. Additional Information:

The procedure started on 30/10/2025 via an online request form on the city website and a couple of back-and-forths (e-mails) to send and check the documents with the clerk. The response to the e-mail takes sometimes 1.5-2 weeks, but it was very comprehensive and smooth.

They initially asked for my Belgian MSc, but it was not really needed in the end since it was in English.

No police visit.

4 months start from the moment they send your application to whomever makes the decision, so for me it was only ~50 days (plus Christmas holidays in-between)!聽

5. Approval Date:

06/02/2026

The overall procedure is very smooth and clear in Leuven. Surprised it was so fast, given that I am not from a friendly country and my work/status history here was not as straightforward. But maybe this new 1000 EUR fee made the difference and drastically reduced the number of applications?

Yes, it was really very fast I would even say a record!

I don鈥檛 think your origin or the reduced number of applications played a role (actually, from what I know, the number of applications has even increased). The difference between 150 and 1000 euros is not that significant, considering the cost of living in Belgium.

Congratulations on obtaining Belgian citizenship! I truly hope that as a sign of gratitude to the Kingdom whose citizen you have become, you will also. It is time to choose a side.

Wow, that was really quick , Congratulations!!!

honestly, that sounds like a record to me.聽 The timeline should normally start from the date you receive the annex, which in your case is 15/12/2025, and with the approval on 06/02/2026 it took about 53 days in total 鈥 roughly half of the usual 4-month period.

In my situation, I received my annex already before the end of November and I鈥檓 still waiting for a decision. Of course, I don鈥檛 live in Leuven, and this clearly shows how much the processing speed depends on the municipality, even though the final decision is made at the federal level.

Certified copy (by home-country consulate) of older birth certificate - did anybody have experience submitting not a newly-issued duplicate, but a newly certified copy of an older one (done at your embassy), for nationality application? I wonder if it is possible.

Can A person apply for nationaliity on B card?

Or L card is a mandatory pre requirement for obtaining citizenship?

@pranav2424

B-card holders are permanent residents. So yes, they have equal rights as the L-card holders to apply for Belgian nationality.

@arjunprasad2143

which commune was that ?

How do I get B card?..my A card expires exactly after 5 years of residence..after that, commune gives B card by default?

I am working for 5 years.

@pranav2424

if you have been working for 5 years you can ask for L card ( Long residency ) you just need to provide your current ID , passport , last 3 payslips , medical insurance and blanco criminal record.

L card takes 5 months. That's why I am asking for B card.

@pranav2424

I don't think it really matters anyways , all processing times at OE are very long ( up to 4 months ) so anyways , better to apply for your L card.

Hello all,

1. Application Region: Antwerp

2. Application Date: 2026/4/17

3. Requested Documents:

  1. Current L card
  2. Master's diploma (The study was done in French) => To prove both language and social integration
  3. Translated birth certificate
  4. 4 years of individual accounts
  5. Payment confirmation

4. Additional Information: I received the Ontvangstbewijs nationaliteitverklaring after signing the declaration.

5. Approval Date: Still waiting for approval

Question: As I have the Ontvangstbewijs, do the four months start to count from today? Or, do I still need to wait for a registered letter?

Thanks for the clarification!

@Valoche328

Yes! the 4 months have started counting. All the best.

@callonafo

Thanks for the response.

I saw that some people got a police visit. However, I was not informed about this by the city hall today.

Is it normal to have a police inspection?聽 聽

@pranav2424

My recommendation is that you submit both. Your current A card renewal process as before. Cause you do not know if the L/B card will take longer, and you must have a valid permit beyond the current expiration date of your card.

I was in a similar case, in a different commune. But still, applied for my A card renewal, and a week later or so, submitted my application for my L card. In the end, I got my L card directly. I submitted both processes 5 months in advance, considering current timelines are longer and summer is coming, and many people will be out on holiday, making the waiting times even longer.

@Jalaniz

Hi !

Does this mean that if IBZ sees you have 2 request ( renewal of A card and L card ) they will give you the L card by default and " cancel" the renewal request of A ?

@Naouel cherif

I cannot speak about the internal process at the government. In my case, it seems that when those two requests were submitted. They decided to issue the L card, and the other request, indeed, was just not processed.

Hello all,

1. Application Region

Flanders. Leuven.

2. Application Date

Documents submitted to the commune in advance via online form, after confirmation from the commune, I scheduled the appointment. This was around 15 days prior to the submission date.

Submission date to the commune: 29 Jan 2026.

Later, I received a letter via registered mail confirming completion of my dossier (10 Feb 2026).

3. Requested Documents

  1. My L card
  2. Birth certificate (Apostilled and translated from my home country)
  3. Integration certificate
  4. Language certificate (A2)
  5. Individual income accounts (Payslips to prove that I have been working for 468 days, minimum)

4. Approval Date

I reviewed MijnDossier, and the request was already approved on 16 Apr 2026. Awaiting now for the commune to send me the formal notification, so I can request my ID and Passport.

@Jalaniz

Just wondering , did the commune actually ask you to provide a language certificate?

It is stated everywhere in the official websites , that 5 years working without interruption automatically proves integration + language.

@Naouel cherif

Yes. I got asked to provide the certificate.

do someone have an idea about if individuele rekeningen document is missing we may use Payslips instead of them? I am not able to reach for 1 year but I have all my pay-slips

BR

@Sabri rer

Yes , it should be possible. You can normally use all of your payslips for that period instead of missing "individuele rekening" file.

So the rule now is you need an integration and language test even if you have worked 5 years uninterrupted?

Hello everyone,

I need some guidance regarding the current Belgian nationality process for my situation.

I have been living in Belgium since July 2019 and currently hold an L card (permanent residence). I completed French language courses up to A2 level, and my commune recently confirmed that under the 2026 rules, A2 is sufficient for nationality.

I also meet the economic participation requirement with around 1700 working days.

However, I am worried about one point related to the 鈥5 years uninterrupted work鈥 route for social integration.

On my Career.be record, I noticed some unpaid leave entries during the transition from my deputation contract to a local contract, although I was still employed and receiving salary during that period.

I also have a small administrative gap of 3 days between employers:

- Employer A until 28/08/2022

- Employer B starting 01/09/2022

My new single permit for Employer B was already approved on 23/08/2022, before my actual joining date.

Because the nationality application fee is now very high (鈧1030), I would like to know if anyone had a similar situation:

- short administrative gaps between jobs,

- unpaid leave entries on Career records,

- or transition from deputation to local contract.

Was your nationality application accepted without issues?

Any advice on whether this 3-day gap could affect the 鈥渦ninterrupted work鈥 condition would really help.

Thanks

Vaibhav

@Vs2802

Uninterrupted work means 0 interruption even 3 days. The rule is that if you change employer , you need to be really careful so if you contract stop on 28/08/2022 , your contract with new employer must start 29/08/2022..

Indeed, with the 1030 fee this is a risk to take , but you should contact聽 the commune or maybe directly the parquet if possible to get some confirmation on that, but it's pretty clear honestly what uninterrupted means hmm.png

Hi everyone,

I would like to ask about a situation concerning a friend regarding a Belgian nationality application.

The husband and their children obtained Belgian nationality in March. Recently, the wife went to the Antwerp commune in Deurne to submit her own nationality application. The officer accepted all her other documents, but refused to accept her Deelcertificaten as proof of language knowledge.

She is still currently attending lessons at CVO and is now in level 2.1 and 2.2 for Reading and Writing. She already passed Listening and Speaking. She submitted all the certificates she has obtained so far, including the certificates from the completed modules up to her current level.

However, the commune officer told her that the school certificates were not sufficient and advised her to return to CVO Antwerpen to request the correct language certificate required for a nationality application.

When she went back to CVO Antwerpen, she was informed that there is now a new rule. According to them, students must first complete a computer based test before they can receive the required certificate for nationality purposes. She was also told that she still needs to attend 5 more classes before she can take that test.

This situation is quite confusing because her husband submitted the same type of Deelcertificaat during his own nationality application, and it was accepted without any issue. Now the wife鈥檚 certificates are suddenly being refused.

Has anyone experienced something similar recently? Is there really a new rule regarding language proof for nationality applications?

I advised her to contact Atlas for more clarification and guidance.

Please share your experience or advice if you have faced a similar situation.

@callonafo

Because in Brussels..the rule is different and in flanders the rule is DIFFERENT.

FLANDERS REQUIRES computes test etc..Brussels DOES NOT require it. But for applying in Brussels, you need to RESIDE IN BRUSSELS.

@callonafo

I think NT2 test is the one required for the nationality
