As an EU citizen, since Italy apparently does not have a separate agreement with Brazil, you're entitled to remain in Brazil for 90 out of each 180 days, counting from your arrival.  You may not extend:  you have to leave after 90 days.  However, you can return for another 90 days, after being out of the country for 90 days between visits.

The Federal Police computer system counts your days.  In their system, your record looks something like this:

Period 1:  6/11/2019 to 3/2/20 -- 90 days allowed stay in Brazil, including day of arrival and presumed day of departure

Period 2: 4/2/20 to 5/5/20 -- time you were required to be out of Brazil

Period 3:  6/5/20 to 4/8/20 -- time you are allowed back in Brazil

You overstayed 32 days by their count during Period 2; rather than counting those days against your next stay, they've fined you, so your dates remain unchanged.  Assuming that you pay the fine, you, in effect, get credit for being absent during Period 2, and will be allowed back for Period 3.

If you return later than May 6, say in June or July, your "clock" will be reset, and your 90 days will begin on the day of your arrival.  But, according to the agreement between Brazil and the EU, the longest you can stay for a visit is 90 days, and then you have to leave Brazil for at least 90 days.

thks for your answer. :superiore:  So you confirm what the PF said.I can arrive in Rio day 6/5/2020. if I pay fine at the airport.so  i can recover 32days...because  these days are deleted by payment.....
Is it easy to pay fine when i'll arrive in RJ??I hope PF won't send me back to Italy...   i see at Galeao banco Safra  open 24hr.

another question ...if I go to brazilian consulate for request a student visa can I have problem for my pending fine??? could they refuse my request because of the fine (3200reais)???

situation is really bad in Brazil,Europe all over the world.
I hope to arrive to RJ from venice  in may or june.it will e very difficult with coronavirus.

Others have reported being able to pay their fines when arriving at Galeão.  I wouldn't call it "easy":  expect delays, maybe long ones, especially if you arrive on the weekend or outside normal business hours. 
I doubt that Brazilian Consulates are currently issuing visas, particularly in Europe.  You should contact the Consulate by email to inquire about how, when, and whether you can apply for a student visa.

Hi - my husband overstayed his visa last year and had to pay the fine.  It was all very easy.  He wanted to pay the fine before leaving Brasil on the visit where he overstayed.  However, the Federal Police at the airport in Rio didn't allow it.  They told him he had to pay when he returned to Brasil.

When he returned to Brasil about 6 weeks later, they asked him to pay the fine.  Someone from the Federal Police escorted him to the Safra (I think that is the name) bank and he paid it in cash.  With the receipt from the payment, he was allowed back into the country with another 90 day period to stay.  I believe that his flight arrived early in the morning....and there was absolutely no problem in paying the multa.  It also happened very quickly, no waiting.  Maybe he was just lucky for this part

Times have change. As of now there is an issue with closing GIG. First it was closed and them President said keep it open. Rio had the carnival and just now coming up to speed reporting the virus.
I would think arrival from Italy will be an issue in May for a tourist.

The predicted peak of the Coronavirus in Brazil is between April and May. There may not be visas issued for now and any flight might not be allowed in especially from Europe and Asia.

I ALso wanted to pay before leaving brasil however PF didnt allow it.

Hello all. The next month i will return to brazil.I have never been at SP gaurulhos airport.I always been to RJ Galeao.Do you know if is possible to pay my fine (3200reais for overstay) at SP Gaurulhos airport too ??? banco safra or banco do brasil 24Hours?? thks a lot

You shouldn't have any more difficulty than you would at Galeão.  Have a good trip!

Yes GRU has Safra in the international terminal E. It is the only 24 hr bank.
As of today, BR requires a heath certificate as to Cvid from a Doctor. (Not a test result)
The airline will check prior to boarding as well at GRU. Also, must heath insurance accepted by BR.
No extensions for a tourist visa at this time. 90 days max.
