Moving from Texas

Texan2Chile

Howdy, Hola, Oi,

I鈥檓 new here and looking for some real-world perspective.

I鈥檓 67 and only partially retired right now. My plan is to retire fully in about two years (maybe sooner) and relocate to Vi帽a del Mar.

A little background so you know where I鈥檓 coming from: I was born in Texas, but my family moved to Brazil when I was 3, and I lived there until I was 18. I went to the Escola Americana from kindergarten through 12th grade and graduated in 1976. My mother is Chilean鈥攕he moved to the U.S. after WWII for college, where she met my dad鈥攕o I guess you could say I鈥檓 a full-fledged 鈥渕utt鈥 in the best sense.

I came back to the U.S. for college in New Orleans and eventually settled in Houston. Now I鈥檓 feeling the pull to head back down south.

What I鈥檓 especially curious about is the social side: what鈥檚 it like making new Chilean friends as a newcomer (gay and at my age)? My impression is that Chileans can be a bit more reserved than Brazilians, and I鈥檒l admit I鈥檓 a Carioca de cora莽茫o鈥攕o I鈥檓 used to a more spontaneous, open social style.

Any experiences, advice, or 鈥渨hat I wish I knew before moving鈥 thoughts鈥攅specially about meeting people and building friendships in/around Vi帽a鈥攚ould be really appreciated.

Thanks in advance鈥攇racias, obrigado.

Patrick
