help with last minute yellow fever vaccine in Bogota

XavierC77

Hi everyone, My name is Xavier and I arrive in Bogotá on March 31st from Montevideo and fly to Costa Rica on April 2nd. I'm doing this short layover so my dog doesn't have to do a super long flight with connections trapped in the crate. I found out TODAY from Avianca that Costa Rica requires a yellow fever certificate for anyone coming from Colombia. Nobody told me when I bought my tickets. The problem is the 10-day validity rule given my timeline. I've read that some travelers have had success with private clinics in Bogotá who will pre-date the certificate. Does anyone know a specific clinic? Ideally near Chicó/Zona Rosa but anywhere works. Thanks!

That's illegal and not all that clever. If you are not protected, there's nothing to say you aren't infected.

Cheating the system is a very bad idea.

Thanks for the obvious, Fred. Trolls like you are why all these forums are ghost towns. For the record, I already have the vaccine, I'm just not traveling with it.

You asked for an illegal service that has the potential to kill.

Pointing that out is not trolling.

Give me a break LOL. Talk about gross hyperbole.  Cant believe you even live in Colombia.

There is no yellow fever anywhere in Colombia except un the Amazonas. Espescially not at 2500 m in Bogota.

This is just a bureaucratic requirement many countries have " on paper" but few are enforcing.

And 90% of Colombians and even the most naive " honest" expats are breaking rules almost daily, and dont care or even know they are doing things that are " illegal"

Still, it wasnt very good planning by the OP to get into this " pickle" in the first place.

Live and learn.

I got mine in Manizales real easy

Some government  branch where the nurse gives them out for free.

Getting the yellow card is more difficult.I had to take the hand written canet and go to the mini salud office in el centro to get mine.

As far as " pre dated" might be a little more difficult, you  may find it difficult to get it, as most Colombians want to go by the books, but you may find a sympathetic nurse, espescially given the ludicrousness and impracticality of this rule.

Sorry to be honest , but you should have planned this properly before you bought your tickets.

Live and learn.Rules change all the time traveling, but this one has been in the books for many months. You seem to plan your trips like a Latino.

A learning experience.

However, I dont know if they actually check the Vaccination cards in Costa'Rica immigration.

On paper, both Bolivia and Ecuador require yellow fever cards.

We got them, Bolivia didnt check me or my GF or my friends. Niether does Ecuador.

Costa'Rica may be different.  They seem to be different in many ways. Way more " gringoized" and seem to have all types of crazy regs they actually follow.

You can do a search for

...and the first hit that comes up on my browser is a Bogotá government site listing 24 locations for travelers in Bogotá and hours of service:

I do not address the legality but I'm pretty sure that no one would even bat an eye - I imagine if you explained your situation at almost any clinic it's possible they'd understand and colaborar, as they say...

Give me a bresk LOL - @nico peligro

Yellow fever has a high mortality rate, so not really.

You have to plan trips in advance in order to avoid these issues.

@Fred

Bogota isnt Indonesia. Is there yellow fever on top of the Carstenz Pyramid? Like I said yellow fever is only in very remote areas of Colombia where 99% of people never go to.

Dont think you have ever even been here.

Yes you have to plan, but there is nothing " life threatening "here. Hypebole. The only thing you have to.plan for is illogical bureaucracy.

For the fastest yellow fever card in Bogotá, go to the free vaccination point at El Dorado International Airport (Terminal 1), located on the second floor near the DIAN offices. It is open daily from 7 AM to 5 PM (tokens end at 4 PM). Bring your passport and arrive early to avoid long queues.

Key Locations & Tips:

Airport (Best Option): Fontibon Hospital stand at El Dorado Airport offers free vaccinations and immediately issues the International Certificate of Vaccination (yellow card).

Requirements: You must present your passport. The vaccine takes about 15 minutes and is most effective if done at least 10 days before travel, although it is issued on the spot.

Other Locations: If not at the airport, you can visit large clinics like Fundación Santa Fe or Clínica del Country.

Booster Info: If you have already been vaccinated, bring your original yellow card to receive a free replacement or validation if lost.

Try to get your old records on line from the health provider that gave you the shot originally.

I lost my card years ago but the record is still online and yours  may help with your sob storry  when trying to obtain the new certificate.

Hope you speak good Spanish.

Bring photos of your dog and say you only did this for your poor dogs sake.

Colombians are the worlds biggest dog lovers and it will help a lot with you getting a pre dated certificate of some type.

Of course, the dogthing wouldnt work.in a Muslim country like Indonesia..LOL
