Regarding the oath not to apply for citizenship...

I recently applied for a work visa for Mauritius.

My colleagues have been going to Port Louis on my behalf until now.

This is the third time they have gone, but this time, I received a notice from the immigration office stating that I must take an oath before a judge stating that I will not apply for citizenship.

So, I went to Port Louis, prepared the forms with an immigration lawyer, and visited the court to see a judge.

On the way back, I became curious.

Why do I have to declare that I am giving up to appply a citizenship? By this logic, am I eligible to apply for citizenship right now?

As far as I know, you need to receive a monthly salary of Rs. 150,000 to apply for permanent residency, but I only receive about half of that.

The problem is, since returning to work, my colleagues have told me that this is probably my last visa renewal and that the Mauritian government will not issue visas in the future.

Is this true?

According to my colleagues' experience, foreigners who have taken an oath to renounce citizenship have never received a subsequent visa.

Hi there.

I believe you are mixing visa with permit with citizenship and on top of that, you listen to people who have no clue of what they are talking about.

Maybe for a start, tell us where you are from. How come you are here and under what permit etc

You're eligible to apply for Naturalization after 5 years of residence. This is completely different than permanent residence.

By signing that affidavit you essentially declare that you won't apply for citizenship. (Not that it would be granted anyway in most cases)

I think it's done so that in case your permit expires, you can't just apply for citizenship and continue living on the island while the application is being processed.

Just so you know, Mauritius pretty much never naturalizes people. The only somewhat possible way for citizenship is through marriage.

Also, you're not renouncing anything.

They make people sign this form when they are close to reaching that 5 year duration. You can still get your Visa renewed later if you've signed that form.
