05/17/23 it seems that I have an certain amount of outstanding car tickets/fines here in Salvador,
I wonder if it might get me into trouble getting in and out of Brasil at airport pasport check.
(problem is I do not own a car so someone is driving around with my old license plates)
this specific car was and old VW combi wich I have exported in 2017 to Holland,..

You should not.聽 I don't think that the passport control system checks DETRAN records.

If you haven't already, you should report the situation to DETRAN and keep a copy of the report, just in case there's any question.

@pjak106 one thing has nothing to do with other. It should be of no consequence as far as you traveling. However, if you were to apply for a Brazilian driver鈥檚 license or renew an existing one, you will need to clear those debts. Same thing applies to registering a vehicle and or selling one.

@kawakasbah Thank you very much I fully understand, I live in brasil for 15 years and using an international drivers license, simply because they made it impossible for me to swap my EU drivers license for a Brasilian one. ( that's a whole different story I even wrote a chapter about it in my book )

None of this will probably catch up with you unless and until you try to sell a car, or unless you're in a serious accident. At that point there will have to be a reckoning on the fines, and the fact that you've been driving illegally will probably come to light, as well.

Keep your lawyer on speed dial, unless you're leaving Brazil for good.

@pjak106 a quick passing note in response to your difficulty in swapping your EU driver鈥檚 license for a Brazilian. It should be a fairly easy process . Brazil has signed and ratified agreements or international conventions which allow an individual to obtain a full Brazilian license without taking the complete test. EU countries are part of those agreements. When I exchanged my Texas driver鈥檚 license in Rio , it was without any problems. All I had to do is take (Exame m茅dico de aptid茫o f铆sica e mental), which is basically to test your physical and mental aptitude. Piece of cake.

Ps: Eye exam is included in the test.

check with your local detran. They should have a service for foreigners
